About Arlene
When
her father died suddenly 4 days before her 12th birthday
and right before Christmas, Arlene's journey with death
and dying began. By the time she had turned 38, she had
lost friends and family through everything imaginable- suicide,
murder, accident, illness and nearly was killed by a drunk
driver herself. Arlene became involved in the work of comfort
for the dying and those who remain. She was on the front
lines of the AIDS crisis in NY being a key player in bringing
forward the first program for babies with AIDS in the country.
She also focused on homeless and abused teens as a teacher
and program director. Thus she learned to embrace death
as part of the cycle of life and to savor every moment and
take no one and nothing for granted.
Arlene holds a Master's Degree from Columbia University
in Family and Community Education and a certificate in Applied
Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica.
She is also a hospice chaplain and minister, a certified
Advance Care Planning Facilitator, and has both worked at
and volunteered for hospices for the last decade.
Arlene is a graduate of the Anamcara Program through the
Sacred Art of Living and Dying Center in Bend, Oregon as
well as a graduate of the Metta Institute, led by Frank
Ostaseski.
