Structural Integration
Rolf
Structural Integration, is a method of bodywork that establishes
an ordered and aligned relationship of all the body segments
in the field of gravity. Gravity and the strong connective tissue
fascia are intimately connected in the resilience of our posture
and movement. Fascia is laid down in a multiple layered and
directional fashion that creates an environment of balanced
support within the skeletal structure. Because it is a network
of tissue, any disruption to the body from accidents/injuries,
postural weakness or stress, will ripple into the body and begin
a distortion of joint function and muscle shortening as compensation.
When this happens, we lose muscle length/strength or energy,
fluidity of movement and vitality. Rolf Structural Integration
works to release these harmful patterns through manual manipulation
of the fascia and joint mobilization. We are trying to re-structure
the body and improve the alignment of the joints which supports
the body's vertical lift, one that isn't held up by forcing
a postural pose but rather it's natural inclination toward balance.
The
treatment follows a series of 10 sessions, each with a specific
area of the body to be addressed. The process of Structural
Integration can be challenging, there is firm contact during
the sessions and some discomfort can be experienced. This is
a brief moment of tissue change however, and the result can
be a life without pain or stiffness. Your awareness and condition
of health sometimes eludes the conscious mind, so we are trying
to bring your attention to a most wonderful art form, the human
body. The wisdom of Rolf Structural Integration is that we are
revealing the life force and the innate healing mechanism that
everyone possesses by freeing the body of strain and guiding
the natural ordering of structure. It is physical therapy for
the body and mind. The benefits from Rolf Structural Integration
are: improved flexibility, muscular/skeletal pain relief, better
breathing, better sports performance, efficient posture, faster
accident/injury recovery, improved yoga practice and anti-aging.
In addition to structural bodywork, Inner Light Manual Therapy
also offers healing and therapeutic massage modalities for optimum
health & wellness. Massage Therapy is a great stand-alone
practice in that it is highly versatile in scope, it can be used
on anyone and it can also benefit many different health related
practices like chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, yoga, pregnancy
care, sports training and recovery, anti-aging and stress management.
Massage Therapy has a "user-friendly" quality that will
always yield a positive outcome, it can be soothing and relaxing
or more vigorous and stimulating. Massage Therapy focuses on improving
blood flow into and out of muscular tissue by applying light to
medium pressure to the muscles in a rhythmic motion using the
hands and arms. Our massage programs range from light, soothing
Swedish massage to Deep Tissue massage which uses a firmer pressure
to access the deep layers of muscular tension and improve joint
range of motion.
I began my studies in bodywork in 1995 while living in the central
coast of California. I started out learning basic Swedish massage
therapy at the Central Coast School of Body Therapy near San
Luis Obispo. After graduation I continued my education studying
various forms of deep tissue massage, sports massage, clinical
massage, post-pregnancy massage and Reflexology. In 2005 a colleague
referred me to a course in Deep Tissue Structural Bodywork which
was based on the paradigm developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.
The class was held at the Massage School of Santa Monica and
taught by a man named Garnet Dupois. He was one of my most influential
teachers and his knowledge, personality and expertise changed
my life and work. His class led me to further explore this method
of bodywork and in May of 2007 I enrolled at the Guild for Structural
Integration in Boulder, CO. Some of Dr. Rolf's early graduates
became instructors and continued to teach her original 10 session
"recipe" developed as a teaching tool in the early
days. I completed my training in February of 2008 as a certified
Structural Integration practitioner and began a private practice
in Santa Monica, CA. I am very fortunate to share my office
with Harvey Ruderian, who was trained by Dr. Rolf in 1973. His
work is legendary and the insights he shares are priceless pieces
of history and expertise.
I'm
also an avid endurance athlete and have competed in: Ironman
events, marathons, ultra-marathons and open ocean paddle boarding.
I grew up near the beach so I was always outdoors playing and
getting a lot of exercise, and, as you can see not much has
changed.
